New York, New York – The Coscove team proudly exhibited and attended their first New York Comic Con at the Javits Center from Oct 6 – Oct 9, 2022.

Coscove brought its one-of-a-kind secondhand buy/sell market to New York Comic Con’s Cosplay Central, in the River Pavilion. This sustainable shopping Community Market for fans, by fans, is the1st ever secondhand cosplay shopping experience to be hosted at New York Comic Con! With nearly 200,000 pop culture fans that attended NYCC 2022, Cosplay Central and Coscove’s Community Market stayed busy over that weekend.   

New York Comic Con attendees were able to hunt for unique cosplay items at the Coscove booth, and had the support of the Coscove team to help sell their own cosplay treasures. Numerous cosplayers wore their cosplays, then placed their cosplays up for sale at Coscove’s Community Market. 90% of sellers successfully sold their cosplays by the end of the weekend! 

“This idea is absolutely amazing! The community is aware of how wasteful our hobby is and there was no way to buy or sell costumes easily, until now!” - says one cosplay shopper. 

“Thank you so much for what you’re doing for the community! There’s a couple of things I’ve been wanting to let go for a while but I just wasn’t sure if anyone would want them. I’m so happy to see them go to new owners after I listed them on Coscove!” - says one happy seller. 

“This event needs to be everywhere!!! I’m telling all my friends to sign up now” - says an enthusiastic fan.

On Sun Oct 9, 2022, the Coscove team along with guest cosplayer Alyssa R King (Joker's Harley) further led the conversation around sustainable shopping with their panel, “Sustainable Cosplay - Save Money & Our Planet!” hosted on the Cosplay Central Stage. The panel engaged attendees with questions around, “Can cosplay be eco-friendly?” and shared the environmental impact of cosplay and how to make it better for the planet AND your wallet. This panel encouraged attendees to consider the financial and environmental effects of cosplay and taught ways to reduce their “cosplay footprint”.

Coscove Hosts 1st Ever Secondhand Cosplay Shopping Experience at NYCC 2022

This year's YetiCon was a place for reunions (it's been 3 years!) and new encounters (so many amazing builds!). As first time YetiCon goers we were surprised at how different it was to your typical convention, and the incredible vibes through the weekend. Here's our honest review of YetiCon - the good, the great, and the fantastic.

For those of us not from Toronto, it may be a shock to learn that Blue Mountains where YetiCon is held is actually quite a fair distance from Toronto. But this is for a good reason! Blue Mountains is a mountain resort location, with picturesque views, plenty of greenery, and a village center with quaint shops and accommodations. Though it is most known as a ski resort, the Blue Mountain Resort has no shortage of summer activities. YetiCon being held in June makes it the perfect time to enjoy outdoor fun.

The easiest way to get to YetiCon is definitely driving. Grab some snacks, a D&D podcast, and breeze through the beautiful countryside. It's a perfect mini-roadtrip with friends. 

But for us coming from out-of-town, whether from Montreal, the US, or internationally, your best bet is booking YetiCon's chartered bus. The bus leaves for the con on Friday, and returns on Sunday, so you'll get the whole weekend experience. Remember to book this ahead of time as spots are limited! 

Being held in the Blue Mountains makes YetiCon a very special convention. It not only creates a charming setting for any photoshoots, it also establishes a laid-back atmosphere. You're not just here for a convention, you're also here for a weekend get-a-away, one where everyone is in cosplay - what could be better?

From the lodgings, to the shops and restaurant, and the village center, the buildings and decorations around Blue Mountain Resort paint a whimsical picture. The exposed wood beams and cobblestone streets create an iconic look that is an excellent backdrop. Mondstadt, anyone? Walking around with other cosplayers definitely made me feel like I was in another world, a big part of this feeling was enhanced by this unique setting.

YetiCon organizers take great care to always make sure activities come with the package. Con attendees get free or reduced access to most activities. For the adventurers, ride the gondola or the mountain coaster. This year, a new canopy climb was added. For the relaxers, chill out with some mini golf or lounge by the pool. Last but not least, for foodies, restaurants also run specials for attendees. We got a special cocktail to prove it - the Electric Pikachu! (Can you guess who is in the back?)

How many conventions have great spots for natural light photos? YetiCon has these in abundance. Like I previously mentioned, the village area is perfect for so many historical or adjacent cosplays. 

At the center of the grounds, there is a large pond. In June, the edges of the pond are filled with long weeds, create a hypnotizing backdrop. There are also several small waterfalls with perfectly placed pebbles for serene photoshoots. These areas are usually shaded as well, so it's easier to manipulate the lighting. 

For poolside shoots, you have two options. The Plunge Aquatic Centre is a great place for group shots and pool parties. If you're staying in the village accommodations, the private pools are usually quiet due to being in the off-season. 

Bonus: The playground is a underutilized spot! Check out the dynamic Luffy at the playground below!

The only thing to plan for (I'm sure every Canadian knows this)... is the weather! We arrived on a particularly windy day, so our flowy skirts suddenly became a hazard, and even in the sun it was a bit chilly. But never fear, the weather changes fast. For us, the wind did die down and the rest of the weekend was smooth sailing. Worst case scenario, stay in and play some games at the con!

Get ready, there are A LOT. We studied the schedule religiously on the bus but were still surprised by just how many activities there were when we arrived. So many choices, so little time. My best word of advice is to pick a few must-sees and then wander around to see what catches your eye. We went to some fantastic panels by The Dangerous Ladies and Yaya Han. We sang Disney karaoke and attended a tea party. When the sun sets, get your dancing shoes on and hunt some monsters! 

For us, YetiCon was a fantastic experience. Photoshoots, panels, then a dip into the hot tub at the end of a long day. Relax, and enjoy the incredible atmosphere there. We're looking forward to returning again!

2022 Upcoming Cosplay Conventions in Canada

This past Saturday was the Wicked Comic Con in Boston and boy was I excited for so many reasons!

Not only was it the first comic con near me for 2022, but it was also where I was running a Cashless "coatcheck" style Cosplay Buy/Sell, the first of it's kind!  

This is what our day was like. We had a blast running the cosplay resale event, meeting so many friends, and getting some awesome cosplay photos! Keep scrolling to see what it was like to have a table at the con, what the heck is a "coatcheck" cosplay buy/sell, and all the photos we took during the day! (I got a ton of videos as well but those will need longer time to edit. Check back in a couple of days or a week, and I'll be adding those to this blog post as well).   

First Ever - Cashless "Coatcheck" Cosplay Buy/Sell 

Going to a comic con as an artist/vendor is a totally different experience than when you're going as an attendee. Even though I wasn't selling anything and didn't have merchandise like the other artists or vendors, I still ended up with 2 suit cases, 2 duffle bags, 1 gigantic banner bag, and 1 clothing rack that I needed to bring with me to the event. So I asked a friend to come and help me pretty last minute since I realized there's no way I could lug all that from my dorm to the car, and into the con. So if it's your first time having a table at a con, start packing and planning early and think about how much help you'll need from friends. 

Typically, the con will only give you a table plus two chairs, unless you order special things from them. And this was our packing list for having a table at the comic con this time
* background banner
* display materials (we had two foam boards to put in front of the table)
* metal cube shelf for display 
* clothing rack (only specific to our secondhand cosplay resale event)
* packing tape (it's like plastic wrap but for moving and is super helpful to get everything together quickly at the end of the day) 
* tape (for signs and other emergencies)
* scissors 
* sewing kit (in case of costume mishaps around you)
* business cards, stickers, postcards
* your merch or art or anything else you're showcasing

Most conventions allow you to set up a day in advance and the day of. For Wicked Comic Con, they allowed set up in the afternoon on Friday or from 6-9AM on Saturday. Since we didn't have that much stuff, we figured we'll save ourselves a trip and head over in the morning. After not being able to fit all of our stuff into one car, and needing to call in reinforcements, we finally made it to the Westin Seaport in Boston by 9AM! (My eyes are so swollen from waking up early haha >___<)

We took a good hour to unpack, set up our table, and was ready just in time when the doors opened! Sherri made us super cute postcards and stickers that we were thrilled to share at the con. 

When doors opened right at 10, we were ready to go! 

For this cashless "coatcheck" secondhand costume event, cosplayers set up their accounts beforehand. And on the day of, they just drop off their items, and are free to roam around and enjoy the con. 

If someone wants to buy their item, they'll do so via a unique link that pays each individual seller directly! We had quite a couple of items that people brought in for this very first time we're running this. 

And I can't wait to continue run it at more conventions and making it bigger and better each time!

There were quite a couple treasures that folks found today! My favorite one was this Captain Marvel full set. It was made with leather, in pristine condition, and had all the accessories and shoes included. I was so happy to see @enfleurise costume go to a new home and the new owner Alice (in this pic below) is beyond thrilled about her new cosplay!

By the end of the night, cosplayers came and picked up whatever items didn't sell, or they left it with me so I can take it to the next con and try to find a new owner there.

Last weekend, we went to Anime NYC, and what a blast it was! Granted, I did wake up way too early, stood a bit longer in line than I'd liked, but it was so much fun to see everyone in costume again.
